This is the first step to starting the game. This will affect how your plague acts to different climates, but also how quickly your plague will spread.
Symptom paths effect how your plague interacts with humans.

Infectivity is what gains you more dna points. Don't try to kill people too early in the game. Or else they will have the time needed to finish the cure.

There are the most effective starting countries that I have found.
Saudi Arabia is my favourite just because of its mass of airplanes and ships that travel around the world.
If you are having trouble beating a plague on plague inc:
·         Use a better or different starting country
·         Focus on infectivity more until 60% of people are infected
·         Learn your symptoms.

Start in any country you like. I have made some recommendations in the starting out section above. I usually use Saudi Arabia.

Pick a symptom path. This is how you will evolve symptoms for your plague.

Save up DNA points. So that you can buy a transmission and infect your starting country faster.

I start with Water 1. I find it can increase infectivity more than air 1.

Watch your screen for tips. The game will give you news updates and reminders throughout the game. They can be important and game changing during fighting the cure and killing the world.

You should have around 15 DNA points by now, invest once again in transmissions.

First Symptom Path Trait.

I picked the coughing path.
But, because the virus mutates a lot I have nausea & coughing.
Still not needed until your plague spreads to a much larger scale.

These are important later on in the game.

You should now have roughly 11 DNA points.

Transmissions will not allow your plague to be detected as they don't effect humans other than increasing the chance of the plague spreading.

Keep this in mind. But right now you should invest in drug resistance to help increase infectivity!
Right now you will want to save for more transmissions.

During this stage, I find drug resistance to be a good investment.
Don't buy any more symptoms.

Because virus mutates more, you will have to DEVOLVE lethal symptoms.

This is to not alert the humans.

This lets your virus survive treatments from basic medicine.

This is very effective when starting out.

Once you purchase the drug resistance you should see some red bubbles to pop.

Your disease should now be in multiple countries. This is a good step.

You now have millions infected but still need more transmission!

Evolve the trait: Air 2.

This will increase the change of your plague being spread by airplanes.
Not yet! Devolve any lethal symptoms for now.

This is the reason most people struggle with virus.

They aren't aware that the free traits aren't helpful.

Evolve water 2 & remember to devolve those annoying, random symptoms that keep popping up for "free".

Symptoms can raise awareness of your plague.

This is the point the government has noticed the virus.

The spread of your plague has slowed down from the 5m-50m jump by now. And they are now aware of you.

Keep spreading. Evolve Extreme Bioaerosol to boost your transmission and to infect the still healthy countries.

By now a country should have started to lead cure research on a global level.

Also, your first death will cause countries to worry about how far spread you have become.

The world leaders will now start to kill off animals carrying your disease and close ports, airports & borders.

Now it is a race to see if you can kill before they can cure.

Evolve all symptoms you can. But buy a couple transmissions if you have spare dna points.

Main Symptom Paths:


There are 6 main paths in Plague Inc. These paths are for the core plagues. Bacteria, Virus, Fungus, Parasite, Prion, Nano Virus & Bio-Weapon.

Coughing Path

The most common plague... when it starts out. This path effectively targets the respiratory system early on in the game; spreading your plague fast. Effective in almost any country. This path works best in urban areas. 

|| Coughing, Sneezing, Fever, Immune Suppression, Pneumonia, Pulmonary Fibrosis, Pulmonary O edema. ||

Coughing and sneezing will spread your pathogen (plague) without raising concern until a large population is infected. 
Fever, will kill steadily and should be avoided in normal & brutal strategies until you have infected 50-60% of the global population.
Immune Suppression and Pneumonia will spread your plague at a rapid rate. The combination of these two symptoms target rich, urban countries the best.
Pulmonary Fribrosis & Pulmonary O edema will effectively kill large populations.
Organ failure. This is the end game symptom. This is bought when a plague has reached the end of it's path. This will kill the remaining population.

This path is effective with fungus.

Nausea Path  

Effective at spreading through poor countries. The Nausea Path effects the digestive track and spreads mainly through vomiting, infected sewage and airborne particles.

(Coma, Organ Failure, Insanity for lethality)




Nausea is the first symptom your plague utilizes in this path. This spreads the disease but doesn't do anything else.
Vomiting is the key to infecting populations. Not very effective unless combined with air I & water I. 
Diarrhea is deadly in poor countries. Increases spread of disease but raises concerns.
Pulmonary Fibrosis, Pulmonary O edema. - These two help spread your disease later on in your progress. Combine with air II +  to get results.

Organ failure, Coma & Insanity are the recommended deadly symptoms to evolve your plague with.




Plague Inc Tips | Fungus


Casual Tips | Fungus

  1. Stay away from spore burst. Only use if you are struggling to infect an island, or need to infect a remote population. (ex. Greenland, Iceland, Sweden,)
  2. Invest in transmissions, and wait longer than usual to start killing off the majority.
  3. Stay hidden. Keep your visibility down. Do this by not buying any symptoms until later on in the game.
  4. Kill quickly, this will be the best way to stop the cure.

  1.      Use the same tips as in casual. But use more strategy by starting in a country with lots of shipyards & airports. (ex. Indonesia, United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, Japan)
  2. Choose a symptom path. This will help you focus on the goal, and effectively complete the game.
  3. Slow the cure. Save points for abilities like genetic reshuffle.
  4. Cold I & II will help infect Greenland, Russia, Sweden, Canada, Iceland, Norway, Finland.           

Brutal Tips | Fungus   


  1. Know your symptom paths. This will be the key to winning or being defeated by the cure.
  2. Do NOT use spore burst. Unless it's your last hope.
  3. Be aware of the cure. Use symptoms: Insomnia, Coma, Insanity. To slow it down
  4. Defeat fungus using Normal, to learn how this plague acts.

Plague Inc. Fungus Guide | Casual

Okay - I tried this strategy and it worked like a charm. Granted, you will not likely get a great score due to the length of this strategy but at least you will be able to move ahead to the parasite strain.

I started in a cold climate area because often I found that when I start in a hot zone, even though the disease spreads quicker - it often has a hard time taking hold in places like Iceland, Greenland, Canada or Russia.

1. Begin in Iceland (given that it has an airport and also a harbor for ease of transmission).

2. I first started with focusing my energy on upgrading the airborne and water transmission stats to the max as soon as I could.

3. I followed by upping my drug resistance by one notch

4. I also followed by upping my disease's heat resistance by 2 notches, and my cold resistance by 1 notch. (note you can do the above steps in any particular order - the key being point 5)

5. ...which is - do NOT let your fungus evolve until every single person in the world is affected by the disease. This could take a long time (10 to 15 min?). If you want to get things moving a bit by unleashing a spore here or there, that's fine (just don't overdo it at the beginning).

6. Whatever you do, make sure the world does NOT notice the disease up to the point when everyone is infected (but not dying yet). All the while, keep saving enough points so you can eventually upgrade the symptoms to the worst possible situation immediately (organ failure is the best IMO).

7. Once everyone is infected and the disease is still unknown, unleash the disease. Quickly upgrade your disease symptoms to something incredibly lethal (again, my suggestion is organ failure). Immediately you'll see people dying in droves. At the same time, the cure might move quickly, but as you accumulate points through people dying, you can start using points to counteract the cure by upgrading drug resistance, etc.

8. Soon enough, you will see that the body count will pile up asap. More than likely the country that is spearheading the cure will lose its population so fast that the speed of the cure will greatly diminish and eventually you will win the game.

Note: I did not use anything close to all the spores available. The strategy above, while tedious, did allow me to infect so many people that once the fungus got lethal in a hurry, there was no way for the cure to catch up with the sky high death rate.

Not only did this strategy work with the Fungus, but it also worked with the Parasite as well. Granted this method will NOT get you a very high score due to the lengthy nature of the infection process, but it will get you a win if you play your cards right based on the idea I mentioned above.

Plague Inc. | How To Win With Fungus | Casual

1. Use the spore burst sparingly, if at all. 
2. I had good luck starting in China. As you collect DNA points, upgrade avian once (twice if the news reports a mass migration event), water twice, and air twice.
 3. Upgrade cold resistance once.
 4. As you continue to collect DNA, upgrade drug resistance once. Do genetic reshuffling and genetic hardening twice. 
5. As symptoms appear, devolve them immediately to prevent disease detection. Some people can get away with using coughing to spread infection more quickly; when I tried that I got detected and search for a cure began before I could infect everyone. 
6. Wait for everyone to become infected (now is the time to use the spore burst once or twice if an island group escapes infection). Be patient, it can take awhile. 
7. Once everyone is infected, select coughing, pneumonia, pulmonary fibrosis, total organ failure. 
8. To slow and stop cure progress, select insomnia, paranoia, seizures, and insanity. Everyone should be dead soon.
